In 1999, two fishing buddies, Winfred and James, decided they needed some really well insulated bait boxes to keep their bait cool and fresh during the searing Alabama Summers. Since there was nothing out there like what they envisioned, they set out to build their own. Their insulated bait boxes not only did a great job of keeping their bait insulated against the heat, but were sturdy enough to sit on. Also, the boxes had the added benefit of being able to float in the water. The two friends felt that their high quality bait boxes were something that they could build a business around, and so, they began discussing the idea.

Their flagship product, the U A Keeper Fishing Rod Holder actually first began coming together back in the Summer of 1997. James was tinkering with some scrap metal and made a replacement for his tubular fishing rod holder. His new creation, made with a little welding and bending, had a hinged design. He found that his pole holder design made it easier to get the pole in and out of the holder.

Soon, the two men experimented with the design, and it was not long before they found the perfect combination of bends and hinging which helped to keep the rod perfectly secure when hit by a big fish. For a while, neither James nor Winfred gave much thought to the little gadget. One day it hit them like a ton of bricks -- "If WE find this rod holder useful, then other fishermen will like it, too!"

Once they realized their rod holder design was actually quite revolutionary, the two men spent several months weather proofing and improving on the design. By the beginning of 2001, equipped with a great bait box and a truly revolutionary rod holder, they formed Keepers Manufacturing, Inc. and based their business out of Kinston, Alabama.
